New Pilgrim River Community Forest

We're proud to announce that the Keweenaw Land Trust is the owner of the Pilgrim River Community Forest! The KLT acquired the 276-acre property to permanently protect natural resources and provide new lands for public enjoyment. Grant funding through the U.S. Forest Service Community Forest Program and matching funds from the J.A. Woollam Foundation and private donors made this acquisition possible.

The conservation area has a variety of forest and habitat types, with around one mile of the Pilgrim River's main channel traversing the property. The river provides for a multitude of public uses, including canoeing, fishing, and wildlife viewing. A 2.5 mile trail winds its way through the forest, offering hikers, mountain bikers, and cross country skiers an excellent opportunity to escape to the woods. The current trailhead can be found near the intersection of Pilgrim and Paradise Roads just south of Houghton. This is a multi-use conservation area available for non-motorized, low-impact recreation. Please respect the land and others during your visit!

The Pilgrim River Community Forest supports the greater goals of the Pilgrim River Watershed Project, a community partnership working to protect watershed health, support sustainable forestry, and provide for public recreation. We look forward to expanding on our success in the coming years and with your help hope to make this happen.

Anyone interested in being on the advisory group that will help develop the management plan should contact the KLT office at info@keweenawlandtrust.org or by phone at 482-0820.
