Mary Markham, Chassell HS Teacher, attends first annual National Green School Conference in Minneapolis, Oct. 24-26, 2010
WOW! I was really fortunate to attend this first annual Green School conference and have the opportunity to network with so many people from across the nation. A quote from Jim McGrath, executive director of the Green Schools National Network, sums it up.
“It was exciting to see the cross-section of attendees at this conference, from:
- traditional public schools, public charter schools and private schools
-public sector, private sector, non-profit sector organizations
-50 different states
- different disciplines/ job titles who normally don’t attend a conference together”
There was even a Youth Summit for area students and also from across the country.

The conference, which was held in Minneapolis, focused on a wide variety ofs of “GREEN” living:
• Creating a School-Wide Green Culture
• Finance – How To Get Green Projects Financed
• Green Careers/ Green Jobs
• Green & Healthy School Facilities: Design, Construction, Indoor Air Quality
• Green Practices: Using Renewable Energy, Energy a & Water Conservation, Waste reduction, Recycling, Green Purchasing and Cleaning
• Green Schools Movement
• Health & Fitness: School Garden Programs; School Lunch Programs; Outside Green Space,/Play Areas
• Stewardship, Student Leadership, Service Learning Projects
• Green Teaching and Learning

There were a wide variety of choices to pick from and one person could not attend them all!. There were also several keynote speakers, most notably Michelle Bouchard from HealthCorps and Phillippe Cousteau (you know, Jacque’s grandson). The Happy Hour/ Networking Event was a blast, too! I think Eco Prestley will be back next year.

Speaking of next year, the 2nd annual Green School Conference will be in February of 2012 in Denver, Colorado! I hope we can get a group of us from the Copper Country to attend!
