Copper Country School Board Honors Baltensperger
April 26, 2012

HOUGHTON - For his tireless efforts and dedication to education, Brad Baltensperger has been awarded the President's Award of Recognition by the Michigan Association of School Boards.

Norm McKindles III, retired superintendent at Baraga Area Schools, presented Baltensperger the award during the Copper Country Associated School Boards Education Awards Wednesday evening in the Memorial Union Ballroom at Michigan Technological University.

This is one of 264 awards given to the various school board members across the state of Michigan. Only four President's Awards were given out this year and Baltensperger, a member of the Houghton-Portage Township School Board and chair of cognitive and learning sciences at Michigan Tech, is one of them.

"Mr. Baltensperger is also a professor of geography at Michigan Tech," McKindles said. "He has received more than 20 honors and grants through the Michigan Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Education, the Seoul-Korean Office of Education and the National Institute for International Education Development, to name a few."
Baltensperger has multiple publication credits, as well as 26 reviews ranging from the 1980s to the present day and has served on the Houghton-Portage Township School Board since 1988, holding every leadership office available there since that time.

"He was one of the founders of CCASB," McKindles said.
Baltensperger said it was an honor receiving the award and he enjoys serving on the school board

"Serving on the school board has been one of the greatest experiences of my life and I have no interest in leaving it," he said. "Being a school board member is not just going to a meeting once a month, siting around, passing a budget and approving the purchase of a new copier. It means learning what other districts are doing to solve the same kinds of problems you have, getting an education so you can make wise decisions and ensuring we have a high-quality education systems in our communities."
