Outdoor Learning Activities for Elementary Students

Target Audience: Pre-K, Kindergarten, and elementary teachers, informal science educators, community partners
Credit: All webinars offer 1.5 SCECHs ($10 for all sessions in the 2020-21 LSSI Learning Series)
Session Description & Presenters:
Join Becky Durling, certified environmental educator and Young Fives teacher at Discovery Elementary in Williamston, for a lesson on Designing and Engineering Insects. Next, Ashlie Smith, Naturalist at the Farmington Hills Nature Center, will share a fun lesson on animal adaptations (i.e. "superpowers"!) designing/engineering an animal using found nature objects. Joan Chadde, with the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative and Michigan Tech University, will present a seasonal science/math activity using colorful Fall leaves that students should be able to find in their backyards or on a walk to the city park. Lastly, Mike Reed, 30-year informal science educator with the Detroit Zoological Society, will share how he was inspired by his elementary teachers to pursue his love of science, that was further supported by his parents at home. Lesson plans & session recording will be provided for all participants.
