Can You Leave No Trace when you're outdoors?

Session Description: What are Leave No Trace ethics and how can I teach these to my students? Presenters will discuss the challenges of record high visitation on public lands, and how Leave No Trace practices can help alleviate the stress on these resources. Presenters will also describe examples of Leave No Trace lessons for students, the seven Leave No Trace principles, and how Leave No Trace is playing an increasingly vital role in protecting public lands. Presenters:
Shanelle Saunders, Conservation Education Coordinator, Ottawa National Forest, Watersmeet, MI. Shanelle is the Conservation Education Coordinator for the Ottawa National Forest and has worked in National Forests throughout the country and most recently was the Fire Communication and Education Specialist for Yosemite National Park in California. She has taught numerous pop-up, backcountry, and wilderness ethics programs focusing on Leave No Trace ethics during her tenure in the Forest Service and National Park Service. Shanelle is also a wildland firefighter and qualified fire Investigator. �It is more important than ever as more people venture into our Forests and public lands to understand some Leave No Trace ethics and realize how important it is for everyone to have some exposure to this type of education.�

Zach Gostlin, Park Ranger, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Munising, MI. Zach is an outdoor educator working with the National Park Service since 2013. He has worked at Rock Creek Park in Washington DC, Grand Canyon National Park, and is now coordinating the education program at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. He coordinates the fall through spring field trip program at the park, which averages more than 3,000 students a school year. Zach has successfully incorporated Leave No Trace lessons into all park K-12 curriculum.
