Congratulations to LSSI Teachers & CCASB Award Winners!

Three LSSI teachers and one LSSI principal/superintendent from LSSI schools received awards at the April 27, 2011 Copper Country Association of School Boards Education Awards Dinner held at Michigan Tech.

LSSI teachers, Brian Rajdl (HS science) and Stephen Smith (HS English), were selected by Hancock Public Schools to receive an Outstanding Education Employee Award for their innovative and dedicated work in support of the 2-credit PEAK class which they created and is now in its third year. PEAK (Partnering for the Environment & Academics in the Keweenaw)is an interdisciplinary science & English class for juniors that meets 2 hours daily, M-F, all year-long. The course engages students in designing & implementing projects that benefit the school, community and environment.

LSSI teacher, Matt Zimmer, was selected by the Dollar Bay-Tamarack City Schools to receive an Outstanding Education Employee Award for his creation of S.O.A.R., a new STEM elective course(Student Organization of Applied Robots) offered at the high school. As part of the course, students design and build a Remotely-Operated-Vehicle (ROV) that is used to investigate local water bodies and Lake Superior. Students have tackeled a project in partnership with Isle Royale National Park to map the presence of zebra mussels at two harbors/docks on the island.

Recently retired LSSI principal/superintendent, Paul Saaranen, received a School Service Award from Stanton Township Public Schools in recognition for his years of service to the district. Paul was a strong advocate and supporter of LSSI projects at E.B.Holman School and also served on the LSSI Advisory Board.

The LSSI leadership team would like to congratulate these education professionals on their well deserved awards!
