On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, The Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative hosted the Wonders of the Watershed Summit at the Dee Stadium in Houghton, MI! The interactive learning event was designed for 6th and 7th grade students across the Western U.P. in order to deepen thier understanding of local ecosystems!
Students participated in hands-on learning stations facilitated by community partners, covering topics such as ecosystem health, water quality, and the interconnections between the watershed, communities, and populations. The event aligned with Michigan Department of Education (MDE) interdisciplinary standards, ensuring students engaged in curriculum-based exploration.
The Wonders of the Watershed Summit was funded by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy's Nonpoint Source Program. Additional support was provided by the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative (LSSI), the Great Lakes Research Center, and Keweenaw National Historical Park.
